Best item ever?
A Rare Hand-Built Granary at Glastonbury Reclamation Yard
Could this be the best item Glastonbury Reclamation has ever purchased? We certainly think it’s right up there.
We recently had the opportunity to acquire a fantastic collection of reclaimed items from just outside Bath, Somerset, and among them was this beautiful hand-built timber granary – a truly rare piece of architectural salvage.
Traditional Granary on Original Staddle Stones
Granaries, also known as grain stores, were traditionally used to store harvested grain and were raised on staddle stones to prevent rats and other rodents fromaccessing the grain. This example is a classic piece of English agricultural history and a real statement item for any garden or property.
A Challenging Collection!
Collecting the granary proved tricky. Using a large telehandler, we were slightly concerned about the overall height of the load on the lorry making its way back to our reclamation yard in Glastonbury 🫣
Thankfully, it made it back in one piece.
Preparing the Granary for Sale
Once back at the yard, we began the careful process of setting the granary up ready for sale. When removing the staddle stones, we discovered they had been set into concrete, meaning all the concrete had to be removed before reuse.
Simon got busy with our new battery-powered stone cutter, along with a lump hammer and bolster, and set about the job. Safe to say he was thoroughly knackered by the end of the day – but the concrete was removed and we could move on.
Set Up and Sold Almost Instantly
We had already prepared the ground at our Somerset reclamation yard, carefully setting the staddle stones to the correct heights before placing the granary back on top. Once installed, it was given a thorough clean and made ready for sale.
The granary didn’t stay available for long – it sold almost instantly.
Let’s hope we find another one…
